The short answer

The train is the simplest public way from Marseille to Cassis: direct trains run roughly every 30 minutes and the ride takes about 30 minutes. The station is 3 km (2 miles) from the village, so plan a short bus or taxi ride at the end. By car, the A50 takes about 30 minutes, and parking in the village is the harder part. A half-day tour with a local guide is one more way to go, with the transport handled for you.

Marseille to Cassis by train, by bus and by car

By train

Cassis has an SNCF station on the Marseille to Toulon line. According to the Cassis tourist office, direct trains from Marseille run roughly every 30 minutes, and Marseille to Cassis takes about 30 minutes. Cassis station has no staffed ticket office most days, so buy your ticket before you arrive, and check the timetable and fare for your day on SNCF Connect.

By bus

The tourist office lists route 78, from Marseille Castellane to the Cassis town center, daily, every 45 minutes. It also suggests a train to Aubagne, then a direct bus to Cassis, about 45 minutes in total.

By car

Take the A50 from Marseille and leave at exit 8, Cassis (toll). The tourist office gives about 30 minutes for the drive. The Calanques National Park says traffic can be very dense in summer and parking very difficult. The park-and-ride lot at Les Gorguettes is covered in the questions below.

How much time do you need in Cassis?

The train takes about 30 minutes each way and the station bus 10 to 15 minutes, so a round trip is roughly 80 to 90 minutes in transit before any waiting. On site:

  • A boat tour from the port: 1 hour for 3 calanques, 1 hour 20 minutes for 5, 1 hour 50 minutes for 8, 2 hours 20 minutes for 9. Tickets are sold at the port about 30 minutes before departure, and winter hours are reduced.
  • A walk to Port-Miou: about 30 minutes each way from the town center. Port-Pin is 15 minutes further and En-Vau another 30 minutes, on a climb the park calls steep and difficult in summer.

For the optional boat ride, we recommend the 1-hour trip to see 3 calanques.

Walking to En-Vau and back adds up to about 2 hours 30 minutes on foot, not counting the trip from Marseille. From June 1 to September 30, access to the Calanques National Park is restricted because of fire risk. Check the daily access map, which shows each day’s rules and is updated at 6 p.m. for the next day, or the Mes Calanques app.

What to see in Cassis

  • The waterfront and the fishing and leisure port, with colorful houses, shaded squares and fountains in the old town.
  • The limestone coves of the Calanques National Park, seen by boat from the port.
  • The Route des Crêtes and Cap Canaille. The road is 15 km (9 miles) long and links Cassis to La Ciotat. The cliff towers 394 meters (1,293 feet) above the sea, and the tourist office calls it the highest maritime cliff in France.

Marseille to Cassis with a local guide

Our Cassis Half-Day Tour from Marseille, 4 Hours is for 1 to 8 guests in an 8-seat minivan, with a local guide. The tour covers tolls, insurance, taxes and fuel, with water on board. The four hours are split into a 30-minute transfer each way, 2 hours 30 minutes on the Cassis waterfront with a snack and an optional boat ride, and 30 minutes on the Route des Crêtes at the end of the tour, with views from Cap Canaille. The Route des Crêtes is pedestrian-only on Sundays, closed in strong wind and restricted from June 1 to September 30. When it is closed, we replace it with a visit to Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille.

The minivan replaces the 3 km (2 miles) between the station and the village and the bus timetable. For other days out, see Marseille to Aix-en-Provence, Marseille to Avignon or all our tours.
